President Muhammadu Buhari has decided to end estimated electricity tariff billing in Nigeria by funding the roll out of 1,000,000 meters.
NAIJA NEWS NG reports that the initiative has started in parts of Lagos, Kano, Kaduna and Abuja. The meters would also be locally sourced to create jobs.
President Buhari announced the development on his Twitter page on November 4th. Read his words below:
“Under the first phase of the Presidential Mass Metering Initiative, we are making funding immediately available for DisCos to roll out 1,000,000 Meters in the first phase, at no cost to consumers. Deployment has already started in parts of Kano, Kaduna, Lagos and Abuja.
Future phases of this Metering Initiative will help us fully meet the 6.5 million deficit of meters nationwide, and will impact an estimated 30 million consumers. All meters under this program will be sourced from local manufacturers and in-country stock, to create jobs.
We are committed to ending estimated billing in all forms in Nigeria, and ensuring that Nigerians pay only for the electricity they consume”
You recall that NERC said that from September 28 to October 11, the DisCos will revert all charges to the tariff existing as of August 31. This is to enable a wider consultations between the Government and labour, with a view to reaching a compromise and resolution of the contending issues involved.
This was announced on Twitter via NERC’s official Twitter handle . NERC wrote :
“For anyone who may have missed it, NERC has issued an Order to the DisCos suspending the recent review in tariffs for 14 days in line with the FG’s agreement with the Labour Union. During the suspension, all tariffs shall be computed on the rates applicable as at August 31, 2020”
