Why We Stormed Okorocha's House - EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has explained why the commission invaded Senator Rochas Okorocha’s house.

NAIJA NEWS NG reports that the EFCC said Rochas Okorocha jumped bail and refused to accept court processes .

This was said by Wilson Uwujaren, EFCC Spokesman in a statement released on Tuesday.

He explained the former Imo State Governor jumped administrative bail and has evaded his corruption trial.

“In the circumstances, the Commission is left with no option than to effect the arrest of Senator Okorocha and bring him to trial,” the EFCC said.

It was earlier reported that  the EFCC stormed the residence of Rochas Okorocha in the Maitama area of Abuja to arrest him on Tuesday.

Sources at the location revealed that the operatives arrived at Mr Okorocha’s home at about 11:30 a.m.

The former governor is being investigated by the anti-graft agency for allegedly stealing state funds while in office. Now a senator, Mr Okorocha is also a presidential aspirant of the ruling party, the All Progressive Congress (APC).

Mr Okorocha had alleged that the siege at his residence was to prevent him from attending the APC screening exercise for its presidential aspirants.

He said this while briefing journalists during the siege on his house.

The siege was still on at the time of this report.

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, today May 24, 2022, arrived at the Maitama, Abuja home of a former governor of Imo state, Senator Rochas Okorocha, to effect his arrest.

The move followed the refusal of the former governor to honour invitations after jumping the administrative bail earlier granted him by the Commission.

EFCC had on January 24, 2022, filed a 17-count criminal charge bordering on diversion of public funds and properties to the tune of N2.9billion against Okorocha.

The case was assigned to Honourable Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court, Abuja but attempts to arraign Senator Okorocha were twice stalled owing to the absence of the ex-governor who evaded service of processes.

At the last adjourned date, March 28th, 2022, Justice Ekwo before adjourning until May 30th, 2022, had warned that it was “the last adjournment I shall grant in this matter”.

In the circumstances, the Commission is left with no option than to effect the arrest of Senator Okorocha and bring him to trial.

APC plans to share between N10k to N20k per PU in Osun. What is the plan to prevent this from happening? Majority of Poor Nigerians can’t say no to money at PUs on Election Day. Or PDP and others are just going to try to share money too? You can’t outspend the Govt in power.

He also added :

“To understand how to defeat an incumbent, we must ask ourselves how APC did it in 2015. Everybody came together to do it. They also prevented rigging of votes. Although the vote buying concept was not this bad; hunger was also not this prevalent in the country.”

Gbajabiamila is pride to Lagos, face of effective legislature - Lagos Assembly

The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. (Dr.) Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, and members of the House on Monday showered encomium on Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, Speaker of the House of Representatives, who recently clocked 60.

The members of the House spoke during plenary describing Gbajabiamila as one who has brought pride to Lagos State.

Speaking about Gbajabiamila’s legislative acumen, Rt. Hon. Obasa described the Speaker of the House of Representatives as “a legislator who carries out his duty with passion and dedication. He has sacrificed his own personal interest in the interest of the people.

“You will recall during the reign of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP); he was awarded a national honour, but because he had reservations the way and manner the country was being managed then, he rejected the offer.

“This shows that he has always been with the people and serves in the interest of the people. He has also contributed a lot to the development of legislative institutions in this country.”

The Speaker thereafter directed the Clerk Barr. Olalekan Onafeko to transmit a congratulatory letter to the celebrant.

The Deputy Speaker, Hon. Wasiu Eshilokun-Sanni, in his congratulatory message described Rt. Hon. Gbajabiamila as an example of what a legislator should be .

“He has shown that the older the wine, the better the legislature,” he said.

Majority Leader of the House, Hon Sanai Agunbiade, described Gbajabiamila is a man that is charismatic of the office he occupies.

“He is calm, composed and each time you watch him preside, you would know an experienced legislator is presiding,” he said.

The Deputy Whip of the House, Hon. Mosunmola Sangodara, described Rt. Hon. Gbajabiamila as a great leader who has brought developmental projects to Surulere constituency.

“He is a very outstanding man. His success cannot be far-fetched as this trait can be seen in his mother who was once a Local Government chairperson and performed very well during her time,” she said.

In his contribution, Hon. Temitope Adewale from Ifako-Ijaye said Speaker Gbajabiamila had shown to the world that there is credence in legislature .

“We are celebrating a man from Lagos who has rose from the ranks to become the ‘number four citizen’ in the country,” he said.

While lending his voice to the debate, Hon. Sa’ad Olumo opined that “Gbajabiamila had done everything in terms of quality representation. He has great impact on us in his capacity and representation.”
